Following breakfast we will visit the Tower of Belem along the coast, the ceremonial gateway to Lisbon and the point of embarkation and arrivals for Portuguese explorers. Then we will visit the famous Jeronimos Monastery, one of the most popular attractions in Lisbon. Opened in 1495, this incredible complex, a former monastery, is a national treasure that draws thousands of visitors every year. Admire the splendor of the Portuguese Gothic architecture and see where the monks lived and worked. Pray inside their magnificent chapel. Here we will have Mass, a privileged honor. After, lunch on our own with the remainder of the day designated as free time to explore on your own the heart of the downtown district, with adequate time for souvenir shopping. Dinner on our own. Overnight in Lisbon. (B)
Following breakfast and hotel check out, we will board our bus and depart for Santarem, an enchanting little town with picture-perfect streets where our group will have Mass at the Sanctuary of the Holy Miracle and pray in front of the Eucharistic miracle from the 13th century. After Mass we will ascend the stairs behind the altar for a close look of the reliquary. Bring your prayer intentions - this is a place of miracles. After, lunch on our own. In the afternoon we will transfer to Fatima for hotel check in and time to unpack. Dinner on our own. We conclude the day with a candlelight procession at the Sanctuary. Overnight in Fatima. (B)
Today we enjoy an entire day at Fatima, one of the largest Marian shrines in the world. After breakfast we will have Mass and visit the places of apparition where Our Lady famously appeared. We will walk through the same fields and pathways where the three little shepherd children of Fatima, to whom Our Lady appeared, lived and walked every day. Together we will visit the little hamlet of Adjustrel on the outskirts of Fatima where Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta were born and grew up. After a visit to the house-museum, we will visit the nearby Valinhos hamlet, where the children also saw Our Lady and the Guardian Angel of Portugal (also named the Angel of Peace). We will make time to walk and visit the Via Crucis (way of the Cross). There will also be time for souvenir shopping. After lunch, the afternoon is dedicated to visiting the Basilica and Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima. We will visit the Museum of the Shrine where there is conserved, in the golden crown of Our Lady, the actual bullet that wounded John Paul II when he was shot in St. Peter’s Square in 1981. Dinner on our own followed by the rosary and candlelight procession. Overnight at Fatima. (B)
After an early breakfast and hotel check out we will transfer to the Lisbon International Airport for our flight to the beloved Island of Madeira, called the “floating garden” of the Atlantic. Morning arrival at the airport in Funchal, the island’s main city. Lunch and free time for shopping in Funchal. In the afternoon we will have Mass at the church of Nossa Senhora do Monte (the church of Our Lady of the Mount), the main church in the town and the final resting place of Emperor Blessed Karl I of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (1887-1922). The Emperor died on the island while in exile in the year 1922. We will make time to visit his tomb, where he requested to be buried. Hotel check in. The remainder of the day is open for rest and relaxation, enjoying the enchanting scenery. We will meet in the evening for a festive group dinner, served with local cuisine. Overnight in Madeira. (B, D)
After breakfast we will have morning Mass at the church of Our Lady of the Mount. Then we will visit sites related to the life of Blessed Karl and his family. Karl and his wife Zita, pregnant with their eighth child, were exiled here on November 19, 1921. Their children joined them on February 2, 1922. Charles never left the island. He died there at age thirty-four on April 1, 1922. We will visit the port where they arrived after they traveled three weeks at sea. Next we will stop at the homes where they lived on the island. First they resided at the Villa Vittoria in Funchal, now the grounds of Reid’s Palace Hotel. We will take time to visit and walk the grounds. Later they moved to another residence, a summer villa in the hills overlooking the city at Quinta do Monte. We will walk the grounds there, too. Lunch on our own. The remainder of the day is open for exploring on our own, leisure, rest and relaxation. Dinner on our own. Overnight in Madeira. (B)
